180 Indians released from Pak jail

Pakistan on Saturday released 180 Indians including 179 fishermen, imprisoned for violating territorial waters, as part of their measures so as to smoothen the relation between the two nations.

The released Indian nationals were later on transported to Wagh border near Lahore on four buses for the purpose of handing over them to the Indian authorities on Sunday.

Retired Justice  Aslam Nasir  Zahid who heads a non-governmental organisation told the reporters that the authorities today have released 180 prisoners which is a very positive development and a vindication of our efforts to improve the relations between the two countries.

The organisation is working with an Indian NGO to provide justice and relief to prisoners mostly poor fishermen jailed in Pakistani and Indian jails.

Justice Zahid said the Indian prisoners that included one civilian, Sama Yousuf were released by the government as a goodwill gesture for the start of the New Year.

Yousuf was arrested by the Pakistani authorities after he trespassed into their land. He said there were still 276 Indian fishermen in jails in Karachi while recently the authorities had seized around  320 boats.

Justice Zahid said his authorities were even trying to figure out the missing Pakistani fishermen.
