Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar to be new CVC: Sources

In order to select new Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), the three member committee consisting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj, today met at the PM's residence in Delhi.

It has been reported by the sources that, the committee has selected the Defense Secretary, Pradeep Kumar, unanimously to be the new Central Vigilance Commissioner.

On 31st of July, Kumar retires as Defense Secretary.

Before becoming the Defense Secretary, he was the Disinvestment Secretary and Secretary of Defense Production. Also, he is a Haryana cadre IAS officer of 1972 batch.

After the meeting it has been stated by Sushma Swaraj that, the name of the new CVC has been finalized without any objections and announcement of this name would be made by the Government.

For the post of CVC following the ouster of P.J. Thomas, over 50 nominations were received by the Government from various ministries, departments and individuals.

The appointment of P.J. Thomas as India's Central Vigilance Commissioner was held to be invalid by the Supreme Court in the month of March. 2011. It was a three member committee, who selected Thomas in the month of September, 2010.

According to the Government the corruption charges pending against him should have ruled him out for a job that requires him to check corruption among Government officials and bureaucrats.

It was stated by the court that, the relevant documents for Thomas' case was not properly considered by PM's selection committee. Also, they disregarded the earlier recommendations that were listed by Department of  Personnel and Training, for the purpose of taking action against Thomas.

When Thomas allegedly pushed the Government to permit the import if edible oil or palmolein, he was a senior bureaucrat in Kerala. The deal came to an end by costing crores to the Government.

In a criminal case, he was charged with corruption, but due to the political sensitivities of those named with him, the case progressed in fits and starts, depending on which the Government was in power in Kerala.

A series of promotions were enjoyed by Thomas, which saw him being deputed to the Center.
