Rajiv Gandhi killer's mother demands fresh trial

Rajiv Gandhi
A day after the President rejected the mercy petitions of three men on death row for former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, the mother of one of those who got sentence on Friday  demanded a retrial, alleging that her son had been framed.

Arputham Ammal, the mother of one of the accused while speaking to the reporters, asserted that her son Perarivalam was framed by the CBI. She also said that she would challenge the rejection of mercy petition by the President Pratibha Patil in the court. Arputham Ammal contended that the when the death sentence of the prime accused Nalini could be commuted, then why couldn't this be applicable in the case of her son, who has already spent 20 years in jail. She said she would seek the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha's help to save her son from the glows. President Pratibha Patil on Thursday rejected the mercy petition filed by Perarivalam, Murugan and Santhan, linked to the LTTE. A woman suicide bomber had blew up Rajeev Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, at an election rally near Chennai on May 21, 1991.
