Heart patient seeks permission for euthanasia

Driven by miserable poverty and unbearable pain, a bed ridden woman in Odisha's Ganjan district has moved an appeal petition seeking for euthanasia.

Jhunu Behera aged 38 years, a resident of K Barida Village and a mother of four children, sought a permission from the President and Odisha Governor for euthanasia.

In her letter written to the President, she said that instead of making more troubles to her family members, she wants to die.

Abhiram Pradhan, brother of the patient was quoted as saying that atleast 5 lakhs rupees they needed for the operation so as to replace the valves of her heart that was damaged. But it was impossible for her husband and for her family to meet such a huge amount, as her husband was only a daily wage earner.

Pradhan said that she dashed off the letters on October 28 to the President and Governor seeking permission for euthanasia. He later on added that, even though the Governor and President's office acknowledges the receipt of the letter, so far there has been no reply to the letter.
