Jayalalithaa to appear before Bangalore Court in DA case

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMKhead J Jayalalithaa is scheduled to appear before a Bangalore trail court in connection with assets disproportionate case on Thursday. Earlier that day Karnataka Chief Secretary S V Ranganath and the Director General of Police Achut Rao filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court and added that adequate security will be provided to Jayalalithaa.
The two judge bench consisting of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Dipak Misra rejected Jayalalithaa's seeking exemption from personal appearance due to security reasons. Jayalalithaa is under the Z plus category security and National Security Guard (NSG).
The bench told to the senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi who persisted with his apprehensions over the Jayalalithaa security and added that the helipad has been prepared ready so that once the hearing is over, she can soon fly back.
As part of the security measures, Section 144 will be imposed around the Bangalore jail from Wednesday evening until the hearing gets over.
The case was filed by Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy in 1996 alleging that she amasses wealth worth Rs 66 crore when she was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1991-1996.
In the year 2003, the DMK head had approached the Supreme Court in connection with the case, following which the case was later on transferred from Chennai to Bangalore.
The DMK had alleged that the witnesses were turning hostile as Jayalalithaa has returned as Chief Minister in 2001.
Till now there are as many as 259 eyewitnesses in the case.
On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minster will face questions from the judge himself. And she will be bound to answer all the questions for which there is evidence against her.
Meanwhile, the Apex Court had said that the AIADMK Chief may be examined for a day or two, as the need may arise.
