The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday demanded explanation from the Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh on the government's inability to control the inflation.
BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu told the reporters outside the Parliament that in the last seven years, price rise has been discussed ten times but the result is none and the the government is sleeping while the people are weeping.
He said that the Prime Minister should give reasons for the price rise and even the Prime Ministers Advisory Council has given up.
The council has revised its growth forecast to 8.2% in 2011, down from 9%.
Naidu said that the Prime Minister is answerable to the Parliament and Parliament to people.
The issue has been taken up by the Left as well.
Communist Party of the India-Marxists (CPI-M) Sitaram Yechury said that the price rise is affecting the common man and in this period the government has raised the prices of petrol and diesel thrice. He added that the government needs to take a committed stand on inflation, which can be done only after a discussion and voting.
Both Houses of the Parliament were adjourned and the question hour was cancelled as the opposition persisted its demand for a discussion on price rise under rules that have a provision for voting.
The government has rejected this demand, promising that it was ready to discuss any issue but not under rules that entail voting and make the House recommendations binding on it.
