With the Congress President Sonia Gandhi recovering after her surgery in the U.S, the leaders of the party are in a dilemma about who will take up her place. It was reported by the highly placed sources that the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is with Mrs. Gandhi in the U.S, has promised that he would be back by then. But with regard to his taking up of this symbolic duty is still unknown. In actuality, only very few leaders were kept in the loop ever since the Gandhi family left for New York on Tuesday. Mrs. Gandhi was shifted out of the intensive care unit (ICU), earlier today. It was on Thursday that she was operated upon and remained in the ICU for 24hours. Within the party there seems to be a general sense of despondency. It was felt by a section of leaders that, to tackle it the party should give a detailed statement about Mrs. Gandhi's health. However, the family seems to be firmly against the same. Thus today instead of that a brief statement was made on her health. Smt. Sonia Gandhi remained in the ICU for 24 hours and has thereafter been moved out. Her family has expressed gratitude on her behalf for all the messages and good wishes that have been sent to her. In the statement it was not mentioned when will Mrs. Gandhi return and how soon she will resume her responsibilities.
Also it was not laid down clearly in the statement that whether her condition will require constant care as she has been in touch with her American doctors for atleast six months. The caretaker group which is appointed to look after the affairs of the Congress in the absence of Mrs. Gandhi is supposed to have daily meetings to tackle immediate issues like facing the Opposition in the Parliament, handling of the Telangana tangle, and the Anna Hazare crisis. On the other hand, it remains to be seen if the Congress will be able to manage without Mrs. Gandhi, with the Comptroller and Auditor General Report on the Common Wealth Games that is likely to blow up in the Parliament in the coming days.
