Chidambaram's role needs to be probed : CPI

The Communist Party of India said on Saturday that the 2G spectrum allocation scam is not an internal affair of either the Congress or the UPA, and the CBI should probe into the Union Minister P. Chidambaram's alleged role in it.

Reacting to the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement that the inter-ministerial background paper from his Ministry to the PM's office on Mr. Chidambaram did not reflect his view, the party said that it will not fool anybody.

The party's Central Secretariat said in a release that the issue cannot be closed with the conclusion of a truce between the two Ministers, as this is not the internal affairs of either the Congress or the UPA.

Describing the scam as a national issue, the party said Mr. Chidambaram's role as Finance Minister and the acts of omission and commission in the allocation of the spectrum and licenses needed to be thoroughly examined by the CBI.

Disagreeing with the CBI's approach, it said the leading investigation agency could not decide or argue that it would not probe Mr. Chidambaram's role.
